ARTIST'S STATEMENT
When I have been asked about my strengths as a visual artist, I am quick to reply that my lack of fear of painting with bold, bright colors is my greatest strength. All of my work painted in oil on canvas with colors from our daily surroundings such as yellow, red, lavender, blue and green. These uplifting colors create joy and mental stimulation in the viewer I believe, which is very important to me. I seldom use dark colors or tones on my canvases because I do not want the viewer to experience a landscape, a still life or a portrait from a dark visual or mental place. To me, my pictures are meant to capture and reflect on canvas the Glory of God on Earth.
My artwork is quiet and peaceful as well as joyful. In my portraits, I draw the viewer in first through the eyes-the window to the soul. Then comes the face, the body, and the surrounding atmosphere.
In the still life works, I want the observer to be able to smell the flowers and taste the fruits. In every landscape, there is a call to the viewer to come see in person. There is a call to visit and enjoy the real smells and textures.
My brushwork is the most often short, wide and deep. I use this technique because it makes a strong visual impression and also emphasizes the emotion in the color of the paint.
I learned so much from the works of Monet, Vrubel, Korovin, Golovin, and John Singer Sargeant. All of the impressionists were a great influence on me throughout my life. I studied their use of light, handling of paint, compositions, choice of subjects, and color palettes.
I believe art needs to capture the creations of God. As a practicing artist I want to reflect nature on canvas and the creations of God in bright bold terms.
